Types of Mold

Most people don’t know that mold comes in over 400,000 different types. Some of this mold can be very dangerous to people, while others can be quite harmless to the human system. The problem is that most molds can have serious consequences in building, houses and general constructions. If you allow mold to grow more and more, you could end up having a serious problem in your home.

There are 3 Main Categories of Molds

You have allergenic molds, pathogenic molds and toxic molds. They all cause different problems for your home or your personal health and we are going to give you some details about each of these categories.

  • Allergenic Molds:

    This type of mold is generally not going to be harmful in small quantities, but if a person suffers from allergic reactions to this kind of mold, they could end up with serious respiratory problems caused by mold that can be in small or large quantities. The tolerance to the molds is going to be different depending on each person and their level of allergy. Asthma and allergic rhinitis can be the most common problems for people who experience any kind of reaction to mold.

  • Pathogenic Molds:

    This is the kind of mold that can cause serious infections for people. It doesn’t even matter if the person has a weak immune system or not, these kinds of mold can attack a healthy person and make them very ill. Some of the molds can create fungus that could actually grow in the human body and cause more complications for the patient.

  • Toxic Molds:

    These molds are different from pathogenic molds because they are much more dangerous to human beings. The complications that can come from the exposure to toxic molds could even lead to some forms of cancer and neurological disorders.

Most Common Types of Mold

There are many types of mold that fit in one the categories we just mentioned, but it would be impossible to enumerate and describe each one of them in one article, so we are going to give you the most common types that can affect people and constructions too.



  • Alternaria:

    It’s known for being a very common and powerful allergen that causes some serious complications in the respiratory system in people who have a weak immune system.  Within this type of mold there are many species that attack different kinds of vegetables, fruits and even skin infections in humans. It has a brownish and sometimes very dark color.
  • Cladosporium


  • Cladosporium:

    This species is not generally harmful to humans but it can have some allergic complications in people who are sensitive to allergies in general. Still, the biggest concern with his species is probably for your home. This particular kind of mold can easily grow in surfaces that have moisture present. This species produces Olive Green, brown and Black molds.
  • Penicillium


  • Penicillium:

    This species can grow into very strong mold that can create serious problems for your constructions. It’s probably the most common type of mold that can be found on floors and walls. The Penicillium has many species that are actually safe for human consumption. It can be found in some cheese types and one of the species is also used to create penicillin. This is a predominantly green colored fungus.
  • Aspergillius


  • Aspergillius:

    This fungus comes in around 200 species that are highly aerobic and can be found in most oxygen rich environments. It can be harmful to people but, it also has a lot of commercial success as some of the species can be used to cure many diseases in people and animals. Some strains of this fungus can grow in a yellowish almost orange color, while others are in the traditional green color.
